Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia and Alabama earn berths

Clemson, Oklahoma, and Georgia took care of business in their respective conference championship games on Saturday and received berths Sunday in the College Football Playoff. It is the second time the Tigers have been the No. 1 overall seed, as they also claimed the top spot in 2015.

The College Football Playoff committee sent the Crimson Tide to a fourth straight semifinal even after sitting out the SEC title game.

Ohio State (11-2) finished fifth in the selection committee rankings.

There was visible surprise on the ESPN set when the rankings were released as most thought Ohio State would get the call.

The Buckeyes beat an undefeated Wisconsin team in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday. Auburn (10-3) in the Peach Bowl on January 1. 2 Auburn (10-3) - the only team they've lost to all season - with a 28-7 win Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.

Alabama and Clemson have collided in each of the past two national title games, splitting those matchups, while Georgia and Oklahoma have never met.

Geoffrey Rush denies allegation of 'inappropriate behaviour' during Sydney 'King Lear' production
Geoffrey Rush's co-star has jumped to his defence against an allegation of " inappropriate behaviour " on the set of King Lear . The allegations relate to an incident alleged to have taken place during the company's adaptation of King Lear in 2015.

"I'd say, if we lost to a team in our conference that was not ranked by 30 points, that we wouldn't be having this conversation", Saban said told Van Pelt.

Ohio State can only blame itself for missing this year's College Football Playoff: Two losses - especially an ugly one to unranked Iowa - knocked the Buckeyes out of contention. Ohio State won the Big Ten while Alabama did not even win its Southeastern Conference division. "I was kind of hoping that we had those good wins".

After months of anticipation, we have our four College Football Playoff teams.

Clemson will be making its second appearance in the Sugar Bowl. The Sooners also have a Heisman hopeful in quarterback Baker Mayfield. "Three against the top 16 teams in America", Meyer told ESPN. Oklahoma will meet Georgia in the other semifinal.

With how chaotic the final weeks of the season were, it raised the question of, if four is too small a number for the playoff field?
