Dodgers could be Giants' chief competition for Stanton

Dodgers could be Giants' chief competition for Stanton

NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton's time with the Miami Marlins is about up - provided, anyway, he wants it to be.

Stanton has a no-trade clause and must approve any trade he is a part of. The Los Angeles Dodgers have also been linked with interest in Stanton.

On Saturday, FanRag Sports reported that if given the choice, Stanton would "100 percent" pick the Giants over the Cardinals.

The, Stanton's hometown team and reportedly his preferred destination, remain on the fringes of this offseason competition for Stanton's services. the Marlins and Dodgers have remained in touch about the slugger, but there was been "no substantial progress".

MLB Rumors: Stanton Waiting On Dodgers, Ohtani To Start Meeting With Teams & More

The Dodgers have been somewhat hesitant on Stanton due to their desire not to exceed the $197 million luxury tax threshold or add another nine-figure contract to the books beyond Clayton Kershaw's. If the meetings had occurred while talks between the teams were still fluid, the Marlins would've risked losing leverage if Stanton agreed to be dealt to one team and not the other.

The Giants have said they're open to exceeding the luxury-tax threshold a fourth straight year, which would come with severe penalties, but the Dodgers don't appear so open to the idea and already have plenty of capable outfielders.

Stanton would help the Giants in the home run department as they finished dead last in home runs in 2017.
