Energous Stock Surging After First FCC Approval For Wireless Charging

While phones would seem like an obvious target for charging-at-a-distance technology, a number of devices could potentially benefit from such a feature, including tablets, smartwatches, wireless mice and keyboards and just about anything that needs a charge to stay powered up.

Energous popped 64% to 14.50 in after-hours trading on the stock market today.

Energous, a wireless charging specialist, has received approval from USA regulators for its WattUp energy transmitter. A startup called Pi recently released what it called the first-ever contactless wireless charging product, which uses the same resonant induction tech as Qi, though its range is limited to one foot. The California based company has developed a new transmitter which can convert electric currents into radio frequencies and beam them to devices with built in receivers to accept it.

The company said this was the first FCC approval for remote wireless charging, and its stock (watt) shot up almost 100% in the hours after the announcement.

WattUp supports Wireless Charging 2.0 and is similar to Wi-Fi in that the ecosystem supports interoperability between receivers and transmitters.

Winter Weather Advisory in Place Overnight Tonight for Snow
By the 22nd, a foot of snow had already fallen, but another storm system was moving along the East coast on Christmas night. One final burst of snow is possible later this morning into early afternoon as some colder air rushed in from the north.

FCC approval does not mean that Energous is ready with the wireless charger.

According to Energous, its transmitter is the first wireless charger to be approved under the FCC's Part 18 rules.

Energous will be displaying WattUP next month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which runs from January 9 to 12. That is if Energous will be able to take advantage of the door that has just been opened for it.

What is, however, exciting is the advent of true room-scale wireless charging, where merely being within 15 feet of the transmitter means your device can start soaking up electrons. This only happened after years of sub-par wireless charging performance and multiple standards wars-we can expect the same from wireless charging tech. The Mid Field transmitter can also charge multiple devices simultaneously.
