Former transportation secretary caught up in power outage chaos at Atlanta airport

Stranded travelers sat on the floor, slumped in chairs or stood in long lines at ticket counters a day after the underground blaze knocked out electricity and crippled Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for about 11 hours.

Foxx took to Twitter Sunday to express his frustration over the situation.

The standstill in Atlanta is impacting flights in Philadelphia, but only minimally.

"Whatever the cause, it feels like this one was compounded by confusion and poor communication", he said.

The airport said an outage has affected "several areas" in the facility and officials are working to restore power. It also damaged the backup system.

Power was restored around midnight, but the effects are still trickling down.

That wasn't enough to comfort Jeff Smith, 46, of Pittsburgh, who ended up stuck in a plane on the tarmac for three hours after it landed.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would staff the airport control tower throughout the night so it could handle flights once they resume.

Kremlin says US tip-off helped Russia halt terrorist attack
The call was the second phone conversation between Putin and Trump since Thursday, when the Kremlin said they discussed U.S. President was being held back by his political opposition, and allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S.

Some incoming flights are being diverted to other airports in the region.

"The advice we received was that rather than give wrong information, we needed to wait and provide the truth", Reed said when asked about a lack of communication with the public during the outage.

The Atlanta airport lost power Sunday across concourses and terminals affecting all airlines.

The believe it was sparked by a switch-gear that failed, grounding more than 1,000 flights in Atlanta.

Like Sunday's outage, that April storm hit Delta's largest hub at a busy travel time when there weren't many empty seats to accommodate customers from cancelled flights.

A man dressed as Santa Claus told WSB-TV that he was spreading Christmas cheer to the stranded passengers and that "all the elves" were working to get the power restored.

Hartsfield-Jackson handles 2,500 flights and an average of 275,000 passengers daily, according to its website.
