Geekbench confirms Apple slows down older iPhones

Apple has marginally increased the price of iPhones in India in view of the government hiking the duty on imported cellphones.

The post on GeekBench draws from a Reddit post, which hinted that the iPhone performance was linked to the battery age. According to Geekbench, Apple has allegedly made changes to iOS that deliberately "limit performance" of older iPhone models "when battery condition decreases past a certain point". Seemingly comprehensive data was collected across iPhones ranging from the iPhone 5S to the iPhone 7, with different versions of Apple's software ranging from iOS 9 to iOS 11 to "tell the true story". But what Poole found is that the benchmark distributions of iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 7 units running any version of iOS newer than 10.2.1 have multiple peaks - suggesting some kind of software limitation restricting some devices to a slower processor speed.

He found that results from benchmark tests from the iPhone 6S running iOS 10.2 pooled around the expected performance peak showing what the iPhone 6S was capable of without any hindrance.

The report cites research from Cowen and Co. which suggests that potential buyers do not consider there are enough new features and technology in the iPhone X to justify its $999 price tag. This will likely feed into the "planned obsolescence" narrative.

A Reddit poster hypothesised the issue may have arisen from the iPhone 6s battery replacement program of 2016. There are a couple reasons and angles to approach this argument, but they both end with the same result. To me, all of this just highlights the difficulties that arise from phones with batteries that are hard, or annoying at best to replace. "Nope. 2526 Single and 4456 Multi". Especially with Apple increasing supply much faster than initially anticipated, it stands to reason that cumulative iPhone sales for the quarter will be higher than many analysts predicted early on. Particularly an older battery. This translates into a slower performance without any notification creating an "unexpected" third state which is created to mask the low battery power. That's mainly because if the company had not added the state, users could have lived with their existing iPhone by simply getting the battery replaced.

The RBC survey showed that 62% of respondents in China are interested in buying Apple's flagship iPhone X, compared with 28% of respondents in its USA survey.
