GOP Leaders Claim They've Sewn Up 50 Votes For Tax Bill

As the Senate neared a momentous vote on the sweeping Republican tax bill, Senate Democrats mocked the almost 500-page printed text of the legislation - complaining it was given to them at the last minute before the vote.

Senate Republicans defeated a push by Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer to delay consideration of the sweeping GOP tax bill until Monday.

However, Collins said and other lawmakers confirmed she successfully secured one of her major asks: a restoration of a property tax deduction up to $10,000.

On Saturday, Bishop Frank Dewane, head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, said further analysis and recommendations from the bishops would be forthcoming, but "Congress must act now to fix the fundamental flaws found in both bills, and choose the policy approaches that help individuals and families struggling within our society".

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA tweeted, 'No, I haven't had time to read the 500-page #GOPTaxScam bill that we're voting on tonight, ' with a photo of her reading aloud from pages at her desk.

U.S. Senate Republicans will grapple on Friday with the possibility of adding a tax increase to sweeping legislation meant to cut taxes on businesses and individuals, aiming to win support from fiscal conservatives anxious about the bill's impact on the federal deficit. Reform could mean your taxes are going up.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate will reconvene at 11 a.m. Friday to start considering amendments before a final vote on the bill later in the day.

Australian Senate Votes In Favor Of Same-Sex Marriage
Australia is a step away from legalizing gay marriage after its Senate took up the cause of its citizens. The postal survey returned a 61.6% yes vote with a turnout of 79.5%.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), one of the last holdouts on the GOP bill, announced Friday morning that he would vote for the bill despite concerns that the legislation would add ― as the Joint Committee on Taxation said Thursday ― more than $1 trillion to the debt over the next 10 years. Another option would be to cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent but then have that rate climb incrementally in later years, The Wall Street Journal reported. He said he looks forward to signing a bill before Christmas.

Analysts said lawmakers could scale back tax cuts for corporations and top individual earners. The deduction is for business owners who report their business income on their individual tax returns. The tax cuts for individuals would expire in 2026 while the corporate tax cuts would be permanent.

The House bill does not include that ACA mandate repeal but would eliminate deductions for families on medical expenses and college loan interest.

The letter, first posted Wednesday on CNBC's website, is signed by 137 economists but lists as its author the RATE Coalition, a political advocacy nonprofit representing a group of large US corporations.

The bill would abolish the "Obamacare" requirement that most people buy health coverage or face tax penalties.

Drilling would be allowed in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. There were also breaks for the wine, beer and spirits industries, Alaska Natives and aircraft management firms.
