Massive black hole reveals when the first stars blinked on

Scientists just found a very huge, very young supermassive black hole.

It 800 million times heavier than the Sun, surprisingly a lot, considering the small age gap, which was formed through 690 million years after the Big Bang.

The mass of the black hole is 800 million times that of the sun, the university said, and it sits in the center of a galactic object called a quasar.

Quasars are the most luminous non-transient objects known, and as such they enable studies of the Universe at the earliest cosmic epochs. Explaining how such a massive black hole could have formed in such a comparatively short amount of available time is a challenge for models of supermassive black hole formation, and effectively rules out some of those models.

The astronomers reportedly plan to keep looking for more distant quasars to understand what was happening in the universe at the time.

"It's very puzzling." Simcoe was a lead author of a paper on the discoveries, published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Although the universe is home to billions of planets and stars, scientists believe only 20 to 100 supermassive black holes exists, according to The Verge.

Quasars could be detected from the farthest corners of the world as they are the most distant objects known. She was very interested in scientists, as it refers to the early period after origination of the Universe.

Geballe said that makes it 200 times more massive than the black hole at the center of our galaxy, prompting the question: How did it get so big so fast? Its black hole was even larger at 2 billion solar masses.

Much bigger black holes are out there, but none so far away - at least among those found so far. "And it greatly confused us", says MIT Professor of physics Robert Simcoe. As the gas falls into the black hole, it speeds up, heats up and brightens, which allows astronomers to see them from across the universe.

"We expect to find more such objects as new surveys of the sky come online [in] the next decade", Simcoe told MACH, adding that such astronomical investigations are "expected to be a growth industry". As the universe rapidly expanded, these particles cooled and coalesced into neutral hydrogen gas during an era that is sometimes referred to as the dark ages - a period bereft of any sources of light. Astronomers observe the pattern occurred around 690 million years from the formation of the Universe, even before reionizatsii.

The black hole - an area in space-time with vast gravitational effects that can absorb all matter and energy - was formed when the universe was only 5% of its current age, The Independent reports.

The researchers used FIRE to determine that a large fraction of the hydrogen surrounding the quasar is neutral. That means that the black hole quasar was formed exactly during that reionization phase after the Big Bang event.
