Treasury escalates pressure on North Korea with more sanctions

Requested by the United States, Japan, France, Britain and South Korea, the Security Council meeting Monday could bring additional condemnation and discussion of other potential steps.

"Treasury is targeting leaders of North Korea's ballistic missile programs, as part of our maximum pressure campaign to isolate the DPRK [North Korea] and achieve a fully denuclearized Korean Peninsula", said Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.

The sanctions follow a U.N. Security Council resolution adopted Friday that imposes new, harsh sanctions in response to the country's November 28 ballistic missile launch.

The United States sanctioned two North Korean officials on Tuesday over their country's ballistic missile program, in Washington's latest effort to punish Pyongyang for its weapons development drive.

Kim Jong Sik, a veteran rocket scientist, and Ri Pyong Chol, a former senior air force commander, are often seen on television and in photographs with leader Kim Jong Un, walking down the red carpet or sharing a smoke with him to celebrate a successful missile launch. Following the launch, the nation's leader, Kim Jong Un, said the country could now strike the United States with a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

North Korea is believed to have successfully put a satellite into orbit in December 2012 after years of failures dating back to 1998. Both are said to be key figures in North Korea's ballistic missile development. The U.S. has increased sanctions on North Korea following missile tests.

"Through various channels, we've recently learned that the North has completed a new satellite and named it Kwangmyongsong-5", a South Korean government source revealed.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution Friday limiting the amount of gasoline and diesel North Korea can import and tightening inspections of ships suspected of illegally carrying banned items to or from North Korea.

Washington says there is no comparison between its openly conducted, internationally monitored military drills and North Korea's weapons programs, which the global community has banned. The has spoken enough about North Korea.
