A Highly Classified Spy Satellite Has Been Destroyed. Probably

SpaceX's comment on the issue seemed to imply that the reason the Zuma payload failed to detach in the second stage was not their fault but rather that of Northrop Grumman or perhaps the payload itself. The company cheered a successful liftoff and then the touchdown of its first-stage booster back on land so that it could be flown again, a practice created to lower the cost of spaceflight.

An expensive, highly classified US spy satellite is presumed to be a total loss after it failed to reach orbit atop a Space Exploration Technologies Corp. rocket on Sunday, according to industry and government officials.

As far as we can tell from reporting by both the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, the Zuma satellite failed to successfully separate from the upper stage.

"For clarity: after reviewing of all data to date, Falcon 9 did everything correctly on Sunday night".

SpaceX's review so far indicates that "no design, operational or other changes are needed", Shotwell said.

The Falcon's first stage completed its job, lifting the rocket off the pad and toward space, then separated and landed back at Cape Canaveral.

Leah Barrett said her family is heartbroken over the loss, but feels better knowing Diaz and Fields have been found and arrested. We would have gone" and removed her from the home, he said. "She seemed OK, playing outside with the other kids", he said.

The Zuma satellite was likely worth billions of dollars, making this the second billion-dollar payload that SpaceX has lost in just two years.

The Falcon 9 with Zuma kicked off on 8 January 2018 to 04:00 Moscow time from the cosmodrome on Cape Canaveral. This points out to the fact that the satellite made it to the orbit and made at least one round of the orbit. As usual with classified government payload missions, the launch's livestream was cut off before the separation of the nose cone and the deployment of the satellite. The Falcon 9 won US Air Force certification for national-security space missions in May 2015, breaking a lock long-held by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin Corp.

While experts believe that a setback of the Zuma mission could be a real threat to the future of Elon Musk's space technology business, SpaceX said its future launches would go on as scheduled, including the much-anticipated launch and maiden flight of Falcon Heavy.

And if the test fire and demonstration flight are successful, SpaceX's manifest will open up to new capabilities thanks to its ability to take heavier payloads to orbit. "We are also preparing for an F9 launch for SES and the Luxembourg Government from SLC-40 in three weeks".

On the other hand, ArsTechnica notes that the fairing for Zuma was also supplied by Northrop Grumman.
