Alligators Have The Most Bizarre Way Of Surviving In A Frozen Pond

The cold-blooded reptiles are capable of regulating their body temperature in all sorts of weather, park officials said, adding that they remain frozen in place until the ice melts. "It is not abnormal for them [the alligators] to do this because they know they have to breathe".

Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach shared a breathtaking video showing the park's alligators with their nostrils poking through the ice. Experts say once the alligators are able to breathe through the ice, they fall into a state of hibernation known as brumation by lowering their body temperatures and metabolism. But unlike mammals that hibernate, gators don't go into a deep sleep. As for the public safety concerns, they've said that anyone can go traipsing around them without the fear of being attacked since the gators are more concerned with surviving than biting. Are these alligators in frozen water alive or not? He just wants to make them more comfortable while they wait out the cold.

"It is very, very abnormal for southeastern North Carolina", Howard said of the ice and freezing temps.
