Apple admits its products affected by global security flaw

Apple Inc will release a patch for the Safari web browser on its iPhones, iPads and Macs within days, it said on Thursday, after major chipmakers disclosed flaws that leave almost every modern computing device vulnerable to hackers.

Now, the California tech giant has confirmed that it has released mitigations for macOS and iOS as well as Safari on the App Store. The Apple Watch is not affected, it said.

Apple is continuously developing and testing various mitigations and will release new updates further in all iOS, macOS and tvOS to tackle the situation. However, Apple has advised its customers to download softwares only from trusted sources- Mac App Stores to help prevent any possible processor vulnerabilities.

The tech firm said it would issue a patch to its Safari web browser for those devices "in the coming days".

Apple's statement comes just two days after it was reported on Wednesday that all Intel chips produced over the last decade feature a design flaw that could put all Windows, Linux and macOS kernels at risk by essentially allowing commonly used programs to read or discern the contents and layout of a computer's protected kernel memory areas.

Both Meltdown and Spectre exploit the capabilities of modern processors from different angles but in the same manner.

"All Mac systems and iOS devices are affected, but there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time", Apple said in blog post on the issue.

Nearly all the devices with chips produced in the two recent decades are believed to be affected by Meltdown and Spectre.

Here's the issue: Modern processors are created to perform something called "speculative execution" to enhance performance. In addition, many operating system vendors, public cloud service providers, device manufacturers and others have indicated that they have already updated their products and services.

Meltdown concerns laptops, desktop computers and internet servers that have Intel chips, and allows a rogue programme to access the memory and other secrets of programs and the operating system contained in the CPU. With Safari and virtually all other popular browsers not patched, hundreds of millions of iPhone and iPad users may have no secure means of browsing the web until Apple issues its patch.
