Cambridge-based Redux bought by Google

Sometime past year, Google quietly acquired a United Kingdom startup doing rather interesting work with sound, including a new type of speaker and haptic feedback. The startup is developing technology, and it will be able to turn certain surfaces into speakers. The transfer of shares of Redux's holding company NVF Tech was confirmed by United Kingdom regulatory filings on 13 December, but Crunchbase says the deal happened in August.

A spokesperson for Google declined to comment on a purchase price, or other the details of the acquisition.

Promotion via the social media accounts of the company ended in April 2017 and in July Google employees were made directors, says City AM. "With 178 granted patents, over 50 pending patent applications, and global engagement with leaders in multiple vertical markets, our vision is to bring the next generation of user experience to every consumer".

Ivanov told New Electronics: "We can turn the screen into a high quality loudspeaker, eliminating the need for an embedded speaker".

Google's parent Alphabet has numerous potential uses for the technology since its core Google division started selling its own mobile phones.

Where Is Flight MH370? Ocean Infinity Could Get $50M For Finding Plane
The Malaysian and American governments have not given up on finding Malaysia Airlines flight 370 which vanished back in 2014. Ocean Infinity had dispatched a research vessel earlier this month towards the expected search area.

It also has technologies that add haptic feedback on mobile displays, which provides vibrations to imitate what it feels like to push physical buttons.

So far, Redux has only been able to use its technologies inside PCs and some vehicle infotainment systems - but that could be about to change. The Pixel 2 in particular had very thick bezels that's very much the same size as its predecessor. Just recently Wired wrote about how companies might use audio to transfer data, which may be part of Google's plan for Redux. While the external space a speaker demands is one thing, it also occupies room inside the phone.

Google has acquired a United Kingdom startup that can turn mobile device displays into speakers.

Redux has demoed its technology on smartphone and tablet displays, in the past, and that very well may be Google Inc (GOOG)'s core intended use for this exciting technology.
