CES 2018 Had a Blackout and The Tweets Are Hilarious

During the brief power outage, tweets about the event started trending with the hashtag #CESBlackout. And still others were incredulous about how the biggest tech show in the world could lose electricity in the first place.

The Consumer Electronics Show was shut down briefly due to a blackout.

North and Central halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, the official venue for CES, were hit by a major power outage that lasted for nearly two hours on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Power was partially restored around 1 p.m. crews from Nevada Energy worked to restore power to the remaining areas in the dark.

Lights went out in the Las Vegas Convention Center in the late morning, leaving the booths of major companies like Samsung, LG and Huawei in darkness visitors used the lights on heir mobile phones to navigate their way out of event space. Power was restored a little more than two hours later.

The power failure followed heavy rain on Tuesday, which had forced Google to shut one of its booths located in the LVCC's vehicle park.

Based on The Smart Audio Report , smart speaker adoption is occurring on pace with the rapid adoption of smartphones a decade ago. The company largely invented the modern smart-speaker category with the summer 2015 launch of the cylindrical Echo speaker.

In a joint statement the Las Vegas Visitor and Convention Authority, NV Energy and Consumer Technology Association (CTA), said condensation from yesterday's rain was what led to the outage.

Heavy rainfall caused the rare power interruption, as Las Vegas experienced an unusually heavy downpour that also caused flooding in some of the booths at the CES, including Google's.

CES sprawls across many venues close to the Las Vegas Strip, and the CTA had highlighted that majority had been unaffected.
