Coli Outbreak Tied to Leafy Greens Likely Over, CDC Says

Nine of those people have been hospitalized, two of whom are suffering from a form of kidney failure, notes CNN, and there has been one death.

The cases in the United States are the same strain as the cases in Canada, and some of them have the same genetic fingerprint. It also warns not to purchase packaged, loose or mixed salads that may have romaine lettuce. CDC should conduct the investigation while providing timely public information, she recommended.

On Monday, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro sent a letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), asking for more information about this outbreak.

The FDA Commissioner tweeted a comment yesterday on the deadly E. coli O157:H7 HUS outbreak in the United States that may be linked to romaine lettuce. As of January 10, 2018, there were 42 cases of E. coli O157 illness reported in five eastern provinces: Ontario (8), Quebec (15), New Brunswick (5), Nova Scotia (1), and Newfoundland and Labrador (13). Since CDC's initial media statement on December 28, seven more illnesses have been added to this investigation. Most people recover from the illness in five to seven days but some develop a severe illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be fatal. Thus, CDC is not recommending that USA residents avoid any particular food given the short shelf life of leafy greens and because a specific type of leafy greens has not been identified. Based on this information, US health officials concluded that ill people in this outbreak were not more likely than healthy people to have eaten romaine lettuce.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) issued its first announcement about an E coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce on December 11. "We're working closely with partners to identify that source", Gottlieb said.

China's Huawei hit by last minute collapse of AT&T phone distribution deal
The deal reportedly died after members of both the US Senate and House intelligence committees wrote to the FCC. Huawei has denied these allegations for years now, but it looks like AT&T was unwilling to take the risk.

It says the likely source of the USA outbreak appears to be leafy greens but they haven't identified which type yet. Canada pointed to romaine lettuce as the source of its outbreak.

On the same day, CDC announced the E. coli strains appeared related but would not identify a source of the infections.

You can protect yourself by washing your hands thoroughly before and after preparing or eating food. While the lettuce that may have caused the illnesses is no longer on the market, we do not know where the products were sold, or where the leafy green was grown, harvested, or processed.

"In collaboration with our association colleagues we'd like to share the following update to last week's communications regarding the E. coli O157:H7 foodborne illness outbreak that has impacted many (of our) members", the produce groups' release said. "You can't taste, smell or see E. coli, which is what makes it so risky".

Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria.
