Golden Globes Backstage: Big Little Lies' Even More Resonant In #MeToo Times

Yes, yes, Big Little Lies won just about every Golden Globe in sight on Sunday night - but what will it look like when it comes back? You'll be seeing many of them here as the night goes on!

Seth Meyers took the stage at the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton, hosting the event and acknowledging that "it's been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood".

For anyone who holds populist award ceremonies to be the end-all, be-all of critical applications, Big Little Lies was one of THE must-watch series from 2017. The movie's star, Frances McDormand, also won for best actress in a drama.

Armie Hammer also failed to clinch an award as best supporting actor, while the movie lost out to Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which unexpectedly found itself the Oscars front runner after taking the biggest haul of the evening. Trust me. The women in this room tonight are not here for the food. "We are here for the work".

Nicole Kidman beat out her co-star, Reese Witherspoon, as the Golden Globe victor for best actress in a limited series for "Big Little Lies", HBO's disturbing tale of suburban life in California.

Rachel Brosnahan won best comic actress for her role in the "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", playing a 1950s housewife who pursues a career in comedy.

Coco won best motion picture, animated while Elisabeth Moss was awarded best performance by an actress in a television series, drama in "The Handmaid's Tale". In the biggest upset of the evening, Jordan Peele's fiercely satirical, and completely topical, horror-comedy, Get Out, was shut out entirely.

"This character that I played represents something that is the center of our conversation right now: abuse", Kidman said during her speech.

She told all females watching that "a new day is on the horizon".

The Globes honored actresses for their first three awards, and all three of the winners made it a point to talk about Hollywood's responsibility to tell stories about strong women. "Now we have a chance to be heard and we're all doing it, trying to elicit change", said the actress, who also executive produced the HBO limited series with Reese Witherspoon.
