Google to Use Page Speed as Ranking Signal in Mobile Search

Google, the tech giant that is estimated to control about 90% of the global search market, plans to make the download speed of mobile web pages a key part of its method for ranking search results. The company ensures that only a small percentage of search queries will be affected by the changes, because only the slowest pages will be pushed down the results. Mobile-first indexing is a major shift away from the current practice of using computer programs to crawl, index and rank websites by first looking at the desktop version.

Google has been pushing faster websites in Search for a long while now. At the moment, it's not yet clear if the same algorithm change will be adapted to desktop users as well.

Set to start in July, the Speed Update will only impact a small amount of the slowest pages, the company said.

One of them is the Chrome User Experience Report, which contains user experience metrics collected from Chrome users on various popular web destinations.

Google announced today the "Speed Update".

As important as speed will become, Google says it can be superseded by query intent.

"We encourage developers to think broadly about".

To further allay fears of AMP prioritization, Google explicitly notes that it will apply the "same standard to all pages, regardless of the technology used to build the page". By April of a year ago, Google News started giving priority to news articles published on AMP sites. Called the "Speed Update", the company will be giving more importance to the page speed in ranking search results.
