Julian Assange granted citizenship after living in Ecuadorean embassy for years

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid arrest and extradition to the United States, was today denied diplomatic status by the United Kingdom government.

The British government said earlier on Thursday it had refused a request by Ecuador for Assange to be given diplomatic status as part of the South American country's efforts to resolve his dilemma. The Wikileaks founder has been claiming political asylum at the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012.

Following reports in Ecuadorean media that Mr Assange may have received citizenship, he posted a picture of himself on Twitter wearing an Ecuadorian football shirt on Wednesday. That's not the case for Julian Assange.

A United Nations panel ruled in 2016 that he was being "arbitrarily detained" and should be allowed to walk free.

There is no evidence at this point that US authorities have filed any charges against him, including secret charges, but CIA Director Mike Pompeo previous year called WikiLeaks a "hostile intelligence service".

The nation's foreign minister announced Thursday that officials had chose to permit Assange's naturalization while they look for ways to resolve his situation.

In November 2010, a Swedish prosecutor issues a European arrest warrant for Assange on sexual assault allegations involving two Swedish women.

The US has never laid charges or sought his arrest for the publication of classified documents relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on the WikiLeaks website.

However, others see him as a criminal who undermined the security of the West by exposing secrets.

She also said she feared threats to Mr Assange's life coming from third party states.

Assange's legal team this week reiterated its demand that London abide by the United Nations ruling declaring him to be unlawfully and arbitrarily detained and calling for him to be freed and compensated.

This sparks speculation that Assange is about to end his self-imposed exile. The relentless attack on Assange and WikiLeaks was and remains a spearhead in the drive by the ruling elite and capitalist governments around the world to crack down on freedom of speech and impose strict control and censorship over the Internet.
