North Dakota State avenges loss to James Madison to win FCS championship

Top-seeded JMU is trying to become just the fourth school ever to win back-to-back FCS championships. NDSU broke the ice to take an early 7-0 lead.

"Hey, take it all in, because this could be taken away in an instant", said Tanguay, who suffered a season-ending knee injury late in the 2016 campaign. It didn't help NDSU that JMU held a big advantage in the punting game. Despite the encouraging field position, Schor whiffed on three pass attempts and JMU was forced to settle for a field goal booted in by redshirt freshman Ethan Ratke. On first down from the Bison 15-yard line, Tanguay grabbed the short, wobbly throw and returned it to the NDSU 29.

Klieman says, "They got different players, just like we got different players".

The Bison would runout the final 58 seconds of the clock for the championship. "People picked us to be the best team this year, and people picked them to be the best this season".

Trailing 7-3, James Madison had a golden chance to take a first quarter lead after recovering a fumble by NDSU quarterback Eason Stick at the Bison 28, but JMU quarterback Bryan Schor gave the ball right back with an interception. Bison quarterback Stick then hit receiver Darrius Shepherd for a 50-yard touchdown in the second quarter, followed up with a Cam Pedersen 32-yard field goal to make it 17-3 NDSU.

NDSU offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham said JMU was the quickest team at all 11 positions his offense has faced all year. But while the Dukes have established themselves as the No. 1 team in the land, North Dakota State hasn't fallen far behind, as they enter this one 13-1 and ranked No. 2 overall.

James Madison, with all of the momentum on its side, advanced the ball to the 19-yard line with 1:53 left, but its only positive gain on the ensuing four plays earned one yard. Marshall then paraded through a stack off defenders to slip into the end zone and narrow the deficit to 17-13.

- The North Dakota State Bison and their fans owned Frisco, Texas, for five consecutive championship seasons, not only on the football field but in area hotels, restaurants and sports bars.

"I love what players pass down to us, it's been like this for years", Dempsey said. "There has been so much adversity that has made us so much stronger as a team. That's what it came down to. the plays were there".

"Most important things to us was don't flinch", said NDSU cornerback Marquise Bridges on the fake punt.

After showing flashes of excellence in the third quarter, the Dukes' reverted to their sloppy style of play from the first half in the fourth quarter.

It left the outcome up to the Bison defense. As Pedersen jolted toward the ball for a 38-yard attempt, Robinson leaped and knocked the ball into the ground to keep the score at 17-13. You can't lack in plays.

The Dukes moved the ball to their own 47-yard line before the drive stalled and punter Harry O'Kelly took the field on 4-and-9.

NDSU - Bruce Anderson had 18 carries for 63 yards and 1 touchdown.
