Airbus says one third of Pratt-powered A320neo jets are faulty

Airbus says one third of Pratt-powered A320neo jets are faulty

In addition, it said it's working to assess an industrial and delivery plan to minimize customer disruption. It put the European planemaker on the map three decades ago, allowing the company to go from a speck in Boeing Co.'s rear-view mirror to powerful equal in what has become a de-facto duopoly in the global civil-aircraft market.

On the global level, engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney said the current population of impacted engines stands at 43 which are installed on 32 aircraft, of which 21 planes have one engine with the modified configuration, and 11 aircraft have two engines with that configuration.

Three Airbus A320neo aircraft operated by India's biggest airline IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, have been grounded, due to the latest Pratt & Whitney engine issue, IndiGo said in a statement on Saturday.

Following this problem, IndiGo has already grounded three A320 neo planes that are powered by P&W engines. The disclosure of new problems with the Pratt engines late last week marks a blow for the A320neo, Airbus's best-selling plane.

Nationwide snow-ice warning issued for Sunday
Highest temperatures will range from 4°C to 6°C. "Most of us will see snow and rain, and there's going to be a lot of wind". Met Éireann are forecasting a snowy start to Saturday night, as wintry showers move in from the west.

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had issued a emergency airworthiness directive (EAD) on Feb 9, that warns even possibility of dual engine in-flight shut-down. But Airbus has still parked around 30 otherwise completed aircraft at its manufacturing sites in Toulouse and Hamburg awaiting engines. "The passengers have also been given choice of full refund as well", the statement added.

Airbus has traditionally offered two engine options on the A320, and the company maintained that approach on the neo. "In late January and early February of this year, four of these modified engines did not perform as anticipated", the company said. The agency ordered flight restrictions on planes powered by those engines: jets using two affected engines were ordered to stop flying them within three flight cycles; aircraft with one affected engine are restricted from certain extended-range flights.

InterGlobe says low-priced carrier IndiGo has since grounded three of its aircraft "in the interim", and that the issue impacts "a limited sub-population" of engines.

Airbus too has issued an alert, saying these aircraft should not be used till further instructions. "Pratt & Whitney is working with Airbus to implement the remediation plans set forth in its all operator transmission", engine maker Pratt & Whitney said in a statement.
