AT&T to Launch 5G in a dozen cities

AT&T will roll out 5G in a handful of cities this year - and one of them is Waco. With higher speeds and lower latency rates, our mobile 5G network will eventually unlock a number of new, exciting experiences for our customers.

Ultimately, we expect to reach theoretical peak speeds of multiple gigabits per second on devices through mobile 5G. I guess we will be able to live stream 4K 360 degree content from our smartphones! Last month, AT&T announced their intention to launch a "true" 5G network by the end of 2018.

The company says that the commercial rollout follows multi-city trials ...

The network is meant to "seamlessly integrate" with current LTE technologies, though it is unclear which specific devices will first receive the 5G treatment, as reported by Engadget. Additionally, it has been made clear this initial deployment is for mobile 5G only - not the all-encompassing 5G network that will infiltrate healthcare or transportation industries and potentially add $500 billion to the economy. Both hardware makers and wireless carriers need to closely time launching 5G devices and networks so the return on investment is maximized. Like other carriers on the road to 5G, AT&T says that it is now deploying new LTE-compatible equipment that can easily be migrated to 5G as soon as faster service is needed.
