Auburn tabbed a 2 seed in NCAA Top 16 bracket reveal

Ultimately, the committee did a fairly good selecting their top 16 teams with a few unusual missteps.

The Tigers are now projected as a number 3 seed in the Midwest Region.

The NCAA Tournament doesn't begin for another month, but if the season ended today, Auburn (22-3, 10-2) would be the top 2 seed and playing in the Midwest region. Despite Michigan State's two top-five wins, it has only a 3-2 record in its "Quadrant 1" games, against top-30 teams at home, top-50 teams at neutral sites and top-75 teams on the road.

No. 17 Oklahoma was projected as a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee's early bracket released Sunday. The No. 2 seeds would be Auburn, Kansas, Duke and Cincinnati.

The selection committee's full top 16 can be seen below.

Villanova was selected as the second No. 1 seed (East Region).

The Tigers are now the No. 9 overall team, according to the committee, and are projected as the top No. 3 seed, playing in the Midwest Region.

Virginia (South) was the top overall seed, followed by Villanova (East) and Xavier (Midwest). But keep in mind that Oklahoma and Arizona rank even lower than the Rams' in those metrics in addition to worse standings in resume-ranking metrics like RPI, yet those Power-5 schools snuck in as the last two No. 4 seeds. They will likely fall out of the top 10 in the next AP poll for the first time of the season Monday, but are still in the mix in the only rankings that will matter in the middle of March.

The No. 2 Cavaliers (23-2, 12-1 ACC) travel to No. 25 Miami (18-6, 7-5 ACC) on Tuesday to face the Hurricanes at 9 p.m.at the Watsco Center.
