British FM to raise detained Reuters reporters case with Suu Kyi

In Myanmar, British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson met with Aung San Suu Kyi in Naypyidaw today (Sunday) to press for action on the Rohingya crisis.

After visiting the Cox's Bazar camp, home to more than 500,000 refugees, Mr Johnson said the "horrendous living conditions" further strengthened his commitment to finding a solution.

Almost 690,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine and crossed into southern Bangladesh since August, when attacks on security posts by rebels triggered a military crackdown that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide.

The killings of 10 Rohingya men occurred in the village of Inn Din in September previous year and the bodies were buried in a mass grave after they were hacked to death or shot and killed by Buddhist neighbours and Myanmar soldiers.

We cannot help but ask, now that Rakhine Buddhists and Myanmar's security personnel themselves have come forward and substantiated evidence of the mass murder by the military and Buddhist villagers, how can Myanmar continue to deny the truth?

Myanmar must find a safe and dignified way for Rohingya Muslims to return, the United Kingdom foreign secretary has said, after meeting the government of Bangladesh.

The refugees also narrated to the United Kingdom minister the challenges they were facing in the camps.

Captured IS fighters provide clues to USA hostages' remains
Britain's the Daily Telegraph newspaper said it understood that London would not hinder any moves to extradite the pair to the US. The men reportedly provided valuable information to military interrogators about ISIS leadership and structure.

Mr Johnson is due to tour Rakhine State with representatives from the Burmese military later.

But aid agencies have expressed fears at their safety, and at the slow progress, with only 1,500 expected to return per week.

Britain's foreign secretary has said it is "vital" that Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh should be allowed to return to Myanmar "in safety and with dignity".

"I pay tribute to the hospitality and compassion shown by the government of Bangladesh, who are facing an enormous challenge in providing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya community". It is looking at the problems in Rakhine state.

"Discussed importance of Burmese authorities in carrying out full and independent investigation into the violence in Rakhine and urgent need to create the right conditions for Rohingya refugees to return to their homes".

The Foreign Secretary stopped in Myanmar as part of a four-day trip to Asia, which will also include a visit to Thailand.
