Canada's Cassie Sharpe soars into women's ski halfpipe final

She won the first ever gold medal in women's ski halfpipe at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Bowman, who won the gold medal at the first women's halfpipe event four years ago in Sochi, was one of three us women to qualify for the halfpipe skiing final at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 on Monday, laying down an 83.60 to qualify in sixth.

The Canadian's solid platform enabled her to drop back-to-back 900s on her next run to increase the advantage over Martinod to 3.60 points going into the final round.

Midway through the contest, Martinod stopped Sharpe as they were preparing for their final run, with only 3.2 points separating gold and silver and the result still hanging in the balance. "After I landed that I was like 'OK, this is it, you can do this, if you land the second run you can bump your score'".

Judges awarded identical 90.60 qualifying scores to Sigourney, although the runs slightly differed.

Despite the fall, Martinod matched her silver medal from Sochi four years ago. Burke's parents and her husband, Rory Bushfield, brought Sarah's ashes to Russian Federation to have them spread across the mountains. She's going for her second gold medal at the Olympics - something is working right!

"I feel my body a bit more when I'm stressed, and this is the first time since I hurt myself that I've skied four days in a row".

"The girls are out here killing it", Sharpe said.

"I'm really glad I went for it", Bowman said.

Despite several skiers having 1080s in their arsenals, Sharpe was the only woman to spin the rare trick.

Calgary's Rosalind Groenewoud qualified 11th with a score of 73.20.

She was just 15 years old when she placed sixth at the U.S. Championships.

"It means so much to have their support, their love", said Sharpe.

Their teammate Maddie Bowman, the defending gold medalist, had already crashed on her third attempt, ending any hopes of a second medal for one of the best female freeskiers in the world.

"Anna made me nauseous to my stomach before I dropped", Sigourney said.

Burke died from head injuries suffered in a training accident in 2012.

"I was like, 'hold it together Trennon, because you're gonna make me cry, '" said Sharpe.

The top 12 skiers from qualification progressed and there were few problems for the pre-Olympics medal favorites.

The 25-year-old Sharpe said she had only met Burke once but still felt the presence and influence of her fellow Canadian.
