Chelsea bomber: man behind NY attack gets multiple life sentences

A federal court in Manhattan sentenced Ahmad Khan Rahimi to life in prison for planting and detonating bombs in the U.S. states of NY and New Jersey in 2016, the Justice Department said in a statement on Tuesday.

Judge Richard Berman looks on as Ahmed Rahimi stands during his sentencing, with his attorney Xavier Donaldson stands behind him.

Rahimi was also ordered to pay $563,000 to victims.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized USA citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in New Jersey, injured 30 people when one of his homemade bombs exploded in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on a September night in 2016.

He placed a second bomb on West 27th Street, but a passerby on edge from the blast four blocks away noticed it and called police, and the bomb squad took the device away without incident. That blast happened just hours after a small pipe bomb exploded along a Marine Corps road race in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. His acts led to a two-day manhunt that ended when he was shot several times.

He described how his father went to law enforcement on multiple occasions to report suspicious behavior he had seen in his son, but ultimately felt let down.

When hunting, a praying mantis remains motionless and strikes out at movement when its prey is in range. In that respect, the bugs appeared to approach 3D image processing in much the same way humans do.

"(Another inmate) asked me how are we going to watch the news and I told him I don't need to watch the news because I am the news", Rahimi allegedly told a family member in a jailhouse phone call, while he was on trial.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghan immigrant who became radicalized through online postings by al Qaeda and ISIS, had faced at least one mandatory life sentence since, including use of a weapon of mass destruction.

In court, Rahimi echoed his father's remarks, seeming to blame the Federal Bureau of Investigation for not stopping him sooner.

According to federal prosecutors, the 30-year-old has shown no remorse for his actions.

Rahimi also allowed some inmates to view materials on his laptop or provided electronic copies as he spread "The Book of Jihad", bomb-making instructions and various issues of a propaganda magazine.

He urged a sentence not based on what people think terrorists might inspire or the fear they may cause. "You have no remorse".
