Dropbox is going public: Here's who's making money

The IPO, which would provide an exit more than a decade after Dropbox was founded, also could spur other large "unicorns" ranging from Uber Technologies Inc.to Pinterest Inc.to test the waters. It's a cloud storage device which stores and manages important content in your personal space.

Dropbox is looking to raise $500 million which is why they filled IPO (Initial Public Offering) on Nasdaq.

Drew Houston, chief executive of Dropbox, helped found the company in 2007, initially naming it Even Flow after a song of the same name by the rock band Pearl Jam.

Some details we're learning about Dropbox thanks to its first public filing: the company's revenue has been increasing for the past three years, growing from $603 million in 2015 to $1.1 billion last year. Still, revenue growth has slowed and the vast majority of its more than 500 million users don't pay. To compete, Dropbox is pouring money into research and development to convert non-paying users to paid subscribers, and to enhance collaborative tools. It noted that the actual number of people using its service might be lower because some register more than one account. However, these are significantly improved margins as the company lost nearly $210 million in 2016 and $326 million in 2015.

Is Dropbox poised to be valued on public markets less than it's valued on private ones? The company had an accumulated deficit of $1.05 billion as of December 31, 2017, according to the filing.

But the KDB is not likely to accept GM's proposal without conditions of its own, as it will be asked to put in taxpayers' money. The official, who had direct knowledge of the matter, said GM had asked South Korea to inject funds into GM Korea through KDB.

"Our modern economy runs on knowledge".

The smaller question: Which company can we compare it to?

Since then, Dropbox, which is based in San Francisco, has grown into one of the leading file-syncing services, though it faces stiff competition from Google, Microsoft and others. Numerous unicorns have taken big chunks of private capital to put off an IPO.

The documents revealed earnings figures for Dropbox, showing it had generated $1.1bn in revenue in 2017, up 30pc on 2016, helping its net losses to narrow to $112m from $210m.

"We have responded to this event by expanding our security team and data monitoring capabilities and continuing to work on features such as two-factor authentication to increase protection of user information", Dropbox said in the filing.
