'Faith is central to America life': Trump addresses 66th National Prayer Breakfast

Trump's appearance at the prayer breakfast was a stark contrast to previous year, when he delivered a freewheeling speech defending his immigration policy, dismissing reports of hostile phone calls with foreign leaders, and ridiculing Arnold Schwarzenegger for poor ratings after replacing the president as the host of the reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice".

"Father, we pray that you will continue to strengthen the tie that binds our hearts together as a nation, and binds our hearts together to our friends and allies around the world", Demings said.

"American heroes reveal God's calling", he said.

And although Trump rarely attends church himself, the emphasis on the role of God in his vision of America is something with which a growing number of citizens disagree.

Such actions are powered by prayer, he said. He said the militants had tortured Christians, Jews and even fellow Muslims in the territories they occupied, but that they had been nearly totally overrun.

Trump concluded by noting the courage and inspiration of a 9-year-old Brownfield, Texas, girl faced with the possibility of not walking again after several strokes. "It has been a disaster", Trump told the crowd.

White House says economic fundamentals 'strong'
And conservative media commentators have largely played along. "Number one, the Trump stock market rally, it rolls on", Varney told "Fox & Friends".

Trump attended the prayer breakfast a few weeks after allegations broke that he had an affair with an adult film actress in 2006 and paid $130,000 to keep her quiet during the 2016 campaign.

Kelly traveled to the speech with Trump, a tacit acknowledgment that even as the fallout from Porter's departure ensnares the chief of staff, the President remains committed to Kelly.

"Today we thank God and she's walking very well", he said.

"As long as we open our eyes to God's grace and open our hearts to God's love, then America will forever be land of the free, the home of the courageous and the light unto all nations", he said. And in every city in town we see the Lord's grace around us through a million acts of kindness, courage and generosity.

In an interview with Politico's "Women Rule" podcast, the Arizona Republican's daughter said her father, recovering from chemotherapy for aggressive brain cancer and a viral infection in December, is taking precautions that are keeping him in Arizona. We see it in the teachers who work tirelessly for their students, and the police who sacrifice for our communities - and sacrifice they do.

"As the Bible tells us, for we are God's handiwork, created in Jesus Christ to do good works".
