Hong Kong Bus Crash Kills at Least 18 and Injures Over 60

At least 18 people were killed and dozens hurt when a packed double-decker bus overturned at speed in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam said she was "deeply saddened", after visiting one of the 12 hospitals that were treating the injured.

Photos and videos published by social media showed the gold-coloured bus lying on its side with its roof torn off, while emergency workers treated injured passengers nearby.

Most of the dead and injured were on the upper deck of the bus, Chan Hing-yu of the fire department told reporters.

Early reports from local media including the South China Morning Post indicate 17 men have died and two women.

Hong Kong implemented guidelines in 2010 that limit drivers' shifts to 14 hours total and 11 hours behind the wheel, but officials said after a crash previous year that more wide-reaching policies would be necessary to improve safety and working conditions, the Times reports.

Last September, three people were killed and 31 injured after a Citybus double-decker mounted a kerb in Sham Shui Po. And then it was like the tyres slipped and the bus turned.

A spokesman from the bus company, The Kowloon Motor Bus company, said HK$80,000 (£7,300) would be paid to each victim's family. The accident occurred at around 6 PM local time on Saturday.

Saturday's crash appears to be the worst since a double-decker bus fell off an elevated roadway in 2003, killing 21 people.
