'In fraud we trust': 36 indicted in global $530mn cyber-crime gang

A federal indictment was unsealed yesterday charging 36 for their alleged roles in the "Infraud" organization which is said to have caused over $530m in actual losses and $2.2bn in intended losses for financial institutions, merchants and individuals.

The Justice Department-led action resulted in the arrest of 36 individual in seven countries - 13 defendants in the United States and the remainder in Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Kosovo and Serbia.

"Today's indictment and arrests mark one of the largest cyberfraud enterprise prosecutions ever undertaken by the Department of Justice", said John Cronan, acting assistant attorney-general.

Cronan said the group meant to cause losses amounting to more than $2.2 billion.

The cyber crime network, operating as an online discussion forum known as "Infraud", ran a sophisticated scheme that facilitated the purchase and sale of Social Security numbers, birthdays and passwords that had been stolen from around the world, the department said. He remains at large. Infraud also provided escrow services that facilitated illegal currency transactions between members.

Two balls later, Willey knocked over T20 superstar Chris Lynn with a beauty as England came storming back into the contest. Malan was the only England batsman to have scored a fifty in the innings, with the second-highest scorer being 22.

Known as the Infraud Organization, the enterprise aimed to be the Internet's premier destination for buying and selling stolen payment card data.

In this scheme, the hackers stole and sold valuable personal information, including USA social security numbers, passwords and other valuable data that could be used in identity fraud.

"The Department of Justice refuses to allow cybercriminals to hide behind the anonymity of the web while stealing personally identifying information, emptying bank accounts, and wreaking havoc on our nation's digital infrastructure and financial system". (See Cybercrime as a Service: Tools + Knowledge = Profit). At the organization's top were administrators who collectively controlled its destiny and seeded it with sellers who had a reputation for delivering illicit goods of high quality.

The Infraud Organization allegedly reaped $US530 million ($A742 million) in losses to USA financial institutions, merchants and consumers.

Like many major cybercriminal organizations, it was against the rules to buy or sell stolen access devices and other contraband belonging to victims within Russian Federation.
