Iran's Involvement and Fuelling of the Syrian Conflict

On Saturday, Israel shot down an Iranian drone that was created from technology from a USA stealth aircraft captured in 2011.

There's no question this isn't good for USA interests either, but especially with US forces deployed across the Middle East on counterterrorism missions; Iran is no fan of the United States. The drone was launched from the Tiyas military airbase-also known as the T-4 airbase, near Palmyra, Syria-journeyed through Jordanian airspace, and was shot down by the Israeli air force over Israeli territory, in order to be able to study it.

During the airstrikes, Syrian surface-to-air missile batteries fired dozens of anti-aircraft missiles at the Israeli jets. This was the first time Israel has attacked a manned Iranian base in Syria.

The Trump administration claimed Israel's attack on Syria was an act of self-defense.

Israel, in war with Hezbollah for more than 30 years, considers Iranian military presence in Syria a casus belli. An Israeli attack helicopter successfully destroyed the Iranian UAV.

According to the Syrian government and its allies, the downing of the Israeli jet signals new rules of engagement in Syria, following more than 100 Israeli strikes that went without any retaliation. But while Israel's interests are clear, what would be the US vital interest? Iran had inaugurated the foreign interventions when it dispatched "pilgrims", "technical advisers" and then militias to bolster Bashar Al Assad's regime since the early months of the violence. Syria represents Iran's first significant military success overseas in recent years.

Israel carried out major air raids in neighbouring Syria on Saturday, including against what it described as Iranian targets in the country. After all, if the drone had not been over Israeli airspace, it would have been far harder for Israel to justify its actions.

Sussan, however, warned Israel shouldn't take their position for granted, saying they would face "more surprises whenever they try to attack Syria". Israel fears that Iran could create a direct land corridor to link up with Hezbollah, which has sworn to destroy Israel.

"Most of the wars in the Middle East have been the result of unintended developments", columnist Nahum Barnea wrote in Israeli paper Yediot Aharanot. It says sirens sounded in northern Israel as a result of the anti-aircraft fire from Syria.

As the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) noted, the IDF intercepted an Iranian made unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) after it entered Israeli airspace from Syria.

Not mentioned explicitly in either analysis, but likely obvious to anybody involved in the region, is that Russian Federation is the only power that's actually talking to both sides in the conflict.

Despite militarily backing Assad's government for nearly three years, Russian Federation has allowed Israel freedom of movement in Syria's skies and a statement distributed by Netanyahu's office after their phone call on Saturday insisted that would continue.

In the Ukraine and other areas of competition such as in Syria, the Russian-American dispute can be seen. "And those billions have been used, in turn, to support even more terrorism", said Cruz. Shortage in manpower has been compensated for by foreign militias or auxiliary forces directly supervised by Russian Federation and Iran, which have spearhead much of the fighting against its opponents in recent months. The media, if it were doing its job, would reveal that Israelis have no right to support rebels in the Syrian Civil War by pretending that they are merely defending the right to exist as a model democracy.

Last weekend's conflagration led to the first shoot-down of an Israeli aircraft in over 35 years. He has to decide whether to keep backing Syria and Iran or decrease his risks in the region. In today's reality of information warfare, such an image indicates a highly meaningful accomplishment. An Israeli attack might help to accomplish that objective. While none of the parties involved have an interest in a full-scale military conflict, the conflict of interests is too fundamental to have been fully resolved.

Mattis continued: "If you're in Bahrain, and the police there have captured explosives and that sort of thing, clearly from Iran; if you're picking up debris in Saudi Arabia of Iranian missiles; or you've got explosive boats, remote-controlled boats, out in the Red Sea, you can see where Iran is either producing the wherewithal for the fight or actually leading the fight, in some case".
