Israel envoy says Palestinian running from peace

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will request, in a speech to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, the establishment of a Palestinian State and will reiterate the need to implement the UN Security Council resolution that calls for a two-state solution, sources close to the matter told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Speaking in front of US President Donald Trump's top two Middle East peace negotiators - Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt - Abbas excoriated the US president's decision past year to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and set in motion plans to move the the US embassy there, characterizing it as "an unlawful decision". The Palestinian leader doesn't want the U.S.in charge of the peace process after the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The stage will be set for a tense face-off with US Ambassador Nikki Haley, just weeks after she launched a scathing attack on Abbas and accused him of lacking the courage needed for peace.

"We give them hundreds of millions of dollars in aid and support", Trump said, before warning "that money's not going to them unless they sit down and negotiate peace".

During his remarks, Abbas told the council that the Palestinians have not "rejected negotiations" and believe talks are the only path to peace. "The choice, Mr. President, is yours", she explained referring to Trump's Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner. Before her no nonsense response to Erekat, she told the global community the USA would be taking names of those who opposed the Jerusalem embassy move.

Abbas, who shunned a visit by US Vice President Mike Pence to the region last month, said the conference should include the Palestinians, Israel, the five permanent UN Security Council members - the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - the European Union and the United Nations.

Meanwhile, Nickolay Mladenov, the UN's Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, warned that ongoing Israeli settlement construction was corroding the possibility a Palestinian state's formation.

That was until Trump took what Abbas called a unsafe move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The Palestinian leader immediately left the council chamber following his address, leaving Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon to complain he was once again "running away" from dialogue.

Haley did not mince words, contrasting the various approaches available to the Palestinians, with "absolutist demands, hateful rhetoric, and incitement to violence" representing one path and "negotiation and compromise" representing a different approach.

"In the coming period, we will intensify our efforts to achieve admission to full membership in the United Nations and to guarantee worldwide protection for our people". "You are the problem", Mr Danon said. "Our negotiators are sitting behind me", she said. "You don't have to praise it".

Mr Abbas previously called the declaration the "slap of the century", saying the Palestinians would no longer accept U.S. mediation. But know this: "that decision will not change", she added. "Israel shut the door on the two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 borders".
