Maldives declares state of emergency as Supreme Court judges arrested

Yameen on Sunday refused to accept the Supreme Court order to release political prisoners and reinstate 12 MPs who defected to the opposition.

Yameen officially announced that the Maldives was in a state of emergency for the duration of 15 days starting on Monday night.

Eva Abdulla, an opposition member of parliament, called Tuesday's ruling "a farce".

President Abdulla Yameen accused the court of overstepping its authority after the ruling last week, and declared a state of emergency on Monday in a bid to put an end to what he described as "a coup".

"China has always closely followed situation in Maldives".

Yameen's opposition has called it a "purge" by the sitting administration as he continues to crack down on any dissent - an element which has come to characterise the government since it came to power in 2013.

What was the Supreme Court ruling? But the notification makes it clear that there will be no curfew and normal movement, trade and businesses will not be affected.

"The world's eyes are on the Maldives right now and human rights must not become a casualty of this ongoing crisis".

Later, former dictator and opposition politician Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was seen on a mobile phone video taken by his daughter being quietly escorted from his home by security forces, hugging friends and family and waving to supporters before being driven away.

"I have not anything to warrant my arrest". I urge you to remain steadfast in your resolve, too.

Nasheed - the country's first democratically elected leader - told BBC News that the government's actions were "brazenly illegal" and amounted to a coup.

The government did not immediately comment on soldiers going inside the building or Gayoom's arrest but the president's main rival, who lives in exile, urged people not to obey what he called an "unlawful order".

Tensions "could escalate to civil unrest and incite violence across the country", they warned.

Opposition leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who also served as president between 1978 to 2008, has been charged with bribery and attempting to overthrow the government.

In a statement, Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the United States "is troubled and disappointed" by reports of the state of emergency.

The White House also warned the government that it "must respect the rule of law, freedom of expression, and democratic institutions".

"This [emergency] can not become a licence for further repression", Omar Waraich, the group's deputy South Asia director, said on Twitter.

India, which said it was "disturbed" over the situation in the archipelago nation, has already issued a travel advisory as part of the SOP but officials would not confirm one of its crucial aspects pertaining to keeping troops on standby.
