Microsoft's latest app moves photos from phones to PCs over WiFi

Microsoft's Photos Companion app works with Microsoft Photos in Windows 10 to transfer photos and videos from a phone to a PC over Wi-Fi. It transfers the photo and video files over WiFi making it necessary for both the devices to be on the same network. After that, point the scanner available on the Photos Companion app at the QR code to begin the transfer.

You can download the app for Android devices and iOS devices from the links given below. "We also knew that Wi-Fi access in the classroom was great between devices, but that any solution that required the cloud for transfer could be blocked by overloaded networks", the company added. Through this app, students will have a fast way to bring smartphone content to Windows PCs in the school setting. This is a Microsoft Garage project, works with Microsoft Photos in Windows 10 to transfer photos and videos from a phone to a PC over Wi-Fi.

Again in the Photos app, click the Import option in the top right corner and click "From mobile over WiFi" option in the drop-down menu. So the Garage and Photos team opted for a Wi-Fi based direct transfer system. The firm also noted that users won't have to worry about network speeds and mobile data charges when they use the new app.

If you're a OneDrive user or you already backup phone photos to another cloud service, this new app probably isn't for you, but Microsoft has primarily designed this for students.

If primary functionality in your app requires authentication by using an app-specific account, you must publish the app from a company account type.

Having said that, it is indeed another step by Microsoft to make its presence felt on mobile devices and is helpful if you'd like to have all your photos and videos under one roof (read the Photos app). The tech giant has launched a new Photos Companion app for iOS and Android devices which has been in testing for some months.
