New PS4 5.50 Update Makes Organizing Games Easier, Adds PS4 Pro Functionality

Pocket-lint has had a chance to play with the PS4 system software 5.50 beta and, among other features, it includes the option to restrict play time for children.

These changes affect a wide variety of areas on the system.

It is also easier to see your PlayStation VR games amongst all installed titles, thanks to a new PSVR icon that appears on their tiles. There's also a section where you can see which games you only "own" through PlayStation Plus.

Are you anxious about how long your kids are playing video games? Additionally, a new option will allow you to hide "certain" items from the Purchased list, such as demos, trials, and betas.

- You'll also be able to change your home screen wallpaper via a USB drive, now, instead of just downloading images or using premade themes. A new USB storage device option has been added to the Themes area of the Settings menu. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look ideal on your dashboard.

Marvel's Black Panther - just how much bite does it have?
Black Panther is readying itself to pounce into cinemas - and anticipation is at an all-time high. We understand who he his and exactly what he wants.

We're introducing Play Time Management, which will allow family managers (and adult family members who are set as guardians) to manage PS4 playtime for child family members on family on PSN. This allows you to track time played and set daily time limits, even from a PC or smartphone. The player can be warned about upcoming cutoff by sending notifications. The supersampling mode is a big deal for users who have the PS4 Pro but don't want to drop hundreds on a new TV. Similar to what's offered through certain games with PS4 Pro enhancements, the new setting allows supersampling to be utilized for more games. This update brings in a slew of new features and updates to the platform, the most important of these being the new "Supersampling Mode" that can improve the image quality of games that might not be properly optimised for the PS4 Pro on displays that are not 4K. While not everything will necessarily benefit, this complements the existing Boost mode as another optional way to leverage the Pro's power.

Following the 5.50 update, you'll be able to customize your Tournaments team page with your own team logo or background that you can import from a USB stick.

This update will give you the ability to delete old notifications for better organization and management.

As above, if you did not sign up for the beta, it's unclear when you will get this update. There's not yet any word on how soon it will launch in full to the public.

We will list the most notable features as per the official PlayStation blog post.
