New South African President Hails 'New Dawn' for Country

Newly-elected President Cyril Ramaphosa will begin his speech at 7pm tonight (if the EFF behave), after the pomp and ceremony that most of us have come to enjoy.

"Issues dealing with corruption, issues on how we can straighten out our state-owned enterprises and how we deal with state capture are issues on our radar."

The President also felicitated with the African National Congress, and the Government and people of South Africa, on the peaceful transfer of power that resulted in the election of President Ramaphosa. In 1991, Ramaphosa was appointed the ANC's secretary general when South Africa's ban on the party was lifted.

"The drive towards the digital industrial revolution will be underpinned by the availability of efficient networks", Ramaphosa said. (There is an excellent profile of him, published in 2013, here.) He is a man of huge experience and substantial achievements, both as a trade unionist and, more recently, as a businessman who has amassed a fortune estimated a year ago to be worth more than 550 million U.S. dollars.

VUMANI MDLALOSE (32) Imbali Unit BB: "This was Zuma's a year ago anyway; I didn't see the need for him to resign".

Ramaphosa founded the National Union of Mineworkers, which organized the poor laborers who provided the backbone of the apartheid economy.

Facebook losing younger users at faster pace
But the proportion of social network users accessing Facebook will continue to decline over the forecast period, eMarketer said. American kids are ditching Facebook for other social media platforms, and 2018 might bring the largest online migration yet.

The ANC had told Mr Zuma to step down or face a vote of no-confidence.

The agency said in December that the "new ANC leadership gives prospect of a credit positive policy shift", but noted that a narrow victory for Ramaphosa could complicate efforts to reform the country. "Mr Zuma has the uncanny ability to read something without the text going through his brain", he said.

Many Ramaphosa supporters and even some former Zuma allies have blamed Zuma for the party's woes.

Moody's put South Africa on review for downgrade in November past year and is due to determine whether it will withdraw South Africa's investment grade credit rating in March, citing similar concerns to those of S&P. The Guptas have been accused of using their friendship with Zuma to gain political influence.

To many, Ramaphosa appeared to be biding his time, simply waiting for Zuma to complete his second and last term in office. They deny all allegations of wrongdoing.
