NY joins gun safety coalition

NY joins gun safety coalition

"Rather than wait for the federal government to come to its senses and pass responsible gun safety legislation, New York is joining with New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island to take matters into our own hands", New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said, announcing the new States for Gun Safety coalition aimed at curbing gun deaths and stemming the flow of weapons across state lines. "But in the meantime, we have made a decision to take a regional approach, sharing information about guns across state lines, sharing a database, and for the first time that I know of, having a regional research center which studies gun violence and the impact on public health", said Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo. The others may have to pass additional laws to prevent those individuals from buying guns within its borders, but the governors argued the coalition is a step in the right direction.

One example: since the national Center for Disease Control can't study gun violence, this plan would create a regional violence research group to study the issue. "We are taking law-abiding citizens and making them criminals". He said that information could be shared with the other states, along with state data about arrest warrants and protective orders that typically aren't included in the National Instant Criminal Background Check system.

There's plenty of talk about how to prevent mass shootings like the one last week at a school in Parkland, Florida. "However, the federal government's continued inaction on this issue has not only allowed the epidemic of gun violence to spread, but it has actually prevented laws like the SAFE Act from being fully effective", Cuomo said. Mr. David said he did not know how many guns have been seized on the basis of New York's list.

They've formed a coalition called "States For Gun Safety".

State law enforcement agencies will be given details on firearm purchase or permit denials for people who are disqualified, according to the release.

Kansas City clearly wanted to sell high and not be stuck with a known headache, or have him leave without compensation. The Rams and Johnson couldn't agree on a long-term deal after he played on the franchise tag for two straight seasons.

The states will also work in cooperation to enhance intelligence gathering, information sharing and response efforts related to gun violence. "The problem is mentally ill people and risky people having access to guns".

In addition, the governors will designate institutes of higher education to create the Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium, described as the nation's first.

"Putting ourselves in the shoes of these kids, they want answers, they want action and they are afraid, so it hasn't been a surprise to me that the kids are leading", Raimondo said.
