Olympics men's hockey: Czech Republic downs Canada in shootout

Petr Koukal and Jan Kovar scored in the shootout to give the Czech Republic a 3-2 win on Saturday and hand two-time defending gold medal victor Canada their first Olympic men's ice hockey loss since the Vancouver Games in 2010.

Wojtek Wolski scored for Canada while Maxim Lapierre, Derek Roy, Rene Bourque and Maxim Noreau missed.

The Czechs then sealed Canada's fate in the shootout, as two of their four shooters found the back of the net.

Cho Min-ho took a feed in the slot from Brock Radunske, one of six Canadians on the team, and fired a wrist shot past Czech goalkeeper Pavel Francouz.

Maybe the Canadians will get some help from other teams, but if they don't advance straight to the quarter-finals after the preliminary round, they will have to play a qualification game to earn a spot in the quarters.

Earlier, Canada had pulled ahead 2-1 on the power play.

She said in a statement that his decision was "part of a unsafe and desperate pattern of cover-up on the part of the president". Trump reportedly believed the report would help him undercut special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

For the second game in a row, Canada scored on its first shot.

The loss was the Canadian men's first at the Games since Vancouver 2010 when they lost 5-3 to the U.S.in preliminary-round play. But Jan Kovar and Michal Repik restored a sense of normalcy by scoring later in the period, and the Czechs dominated play from there to survive a serious scare. "It was the game we expected", he said. We've got a big game. "We expect a good game". Canada will also look to tighten up the penalty kill, which allowed one goal on three Swiss chances.

They tied the game 1-1 at 6:52 of the first when Scrivens deflected a centring attempt up in the air, Lee couldn't corral the bouncing puck and Kubalik pounced on it and slipped it home.

Even though Canada was controlling the play and had a wide edge in shots on goal, the Czechs kept it close, tying the score at 2-2 just 25 seconds into the second period on a goal.

"We were one short today, so that means I've got to be one shot better next time", said Scrivens. The Czechs are installed at +218 to prevail in regulation after barely squeaking out a 2-1 win over a plucky Korean side. Scrivens stopped a pair of shots from Roman Horak and Michal Birner, but couldn't contain the rebounds, and former Carolina Hurricane Michal Jordan snatched the loose puck and went top shelf. Roy made some nifty rushes but couldn't finish it off, while Mat Robinson broke up a two-on-one before losing the puck on a breakaway.

Though the game was entertaining throughout, it wasn't exactly a smoothly played game by either team with extended periods of puck possession at a minimum.
