Steve Bannon Gets Week Extension From House Panel

His previous visit to the committee lasted more than 10 hours, and senior lawmakers in both parties said afterward that Bannon, the former executive chairman of the far-right Breitbart News, declared he would not answer questions about his time in the White House - or serving on Trump's presidential transition team.

Bannon declined to answer the questions in light of executive privilege concerns, a claim of privilege Rep. Adam Schiff, the panel's top Democrat, called "breathtaking".

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has forced the House Intelligence Committee to delay an interview with him for the third time despite a bipartisan congressional subpoena, and will instead be questioned next week, according to a spokesperson for Rep. Michael Conway, who runs the House Russia investigation.

If Bannon refuses to appear before the committee, its members could vote to hold him in contempt.

The committee has chose to postpone his interview until next week to allow time for the committe and the White House to agree on the terms of the interview.

Schiff said the panel would consider holding Bannon in contempt of Congress if he followed White House orders against testifying beyond a pre-approved set of 14 yes-or-no questions.

According to The Hill, the committee gave Bannon, who has also been subpoenaed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian electoral interference, another week to comply.

Schiff said this "ban" on Bannon's testimony covered issues between Trump's election and inauguration, his time at the White House and communications with Trump since, even though Trump has not invoked executive privilege.

A follow up hearing on January 18 was postponed after Bannon's lawyers raised concerns about what he could be asked by panel members.

The White House and the president's legal team have not responded to requests for comment.

The US Investigation into an alleged collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian officials continues.
