Today in Android Oreo: Nokia 5, Huawei Mate 9 and More

If you own an Essential Phone and were hoping to see a stable release of Android 8.0 Oreo rolling out in the next few days, we have good news and bad news for you.

This update will also bring a number of new Android 8.0 Oreo features to the two devices, plus some of Honor's very own additions and changes.

While working on Android 8.0, the Essential devs found out a number of stability issues that need to be fixed and so instead of releasing a not so stable version, the team made a decision to just release Android 8.1 beta instead.

Essential is skipping the release of Android 8.0 for Android 8.1 due to instability concerns. Although the Essential Phone already received three rounds of public Android 8.0 Oreo beta tests, "several stability issues" still stand.

Essential ditches Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade for PH-1, will skip to 8.1 due to 'stability issues'

So rather than releasing Android 8.0 riddled with bugs, the Essential PH-1 will instead receive Android 8.1 Oreo. The Nokia 8 went a step ahead even started beta testing Oreo 8.1. That being said, both the Honor 8 Pro and Honor 9 have been announced last year, the Honor 8 Pro is the company's phablet, while the Honor 9 is still the company's compact flagships, at least until it successor arrives later this year. This, although, requires the concerned recipients have the Android 8.0 Oreo installed, aside from you alone.

Other notable highlights include a new Picture-in-Picture mode, which allows two apps to run on screen at any given time, as well as the ability to dive into apps with fewer taps, such as Notification Dots, which can be seen with a quick press and swiped away easily, and Android Instant Apps, which allow teleportation into new apps right from the browser, without any installation required.

With Android 8.0, the issues were just too much for this team to manage and get out an updated operating system quickly. Therefore, it's going to direct all its efforts to move the Essential Phone directly from Nougat to Android 8.1. Have you updated to Android 8 yet?
