USA jets bomb 'pro-regime' forces in Syria

More than 100 fighters aligned with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were killed after USA -led coalition and coalition-backed local forces thwarted a large, apparently coordinated attack late on Wednesday and early on Thursday, a us official said.

"We estimate more than 100 Syrian pro-regime forces were killed while engaging (Syrian Democratic Forces) and Coalition forces", the official said.

One SDF soldier was wounded, said Colonel Thomas Veale of the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, the command that is directing the battle against the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.

Officials say the airstrikes were in defense "of coalition and partner forces".

US officials declined to provide details on the military assets that were used to beat back the assault, which nations they were from, or the number of advisers in the area.

"The US military is telling Damascus that it better think long and hard if it wants to go after America's partners", Mr Heras said.

Maldives declares state of emergency as Supreme Court judges arrested
Yameen officially announced that the Maldives was in a state of emergency for the duration of 15 days starting on Monday night. Tensions "could escalate to civil unrest and incite violence across the country", they warned.

Russian Federation and Iran back Assad, while the United States and Turkey support differing rebel groups fighting the government.

Neither U.S. officials nor the U.S. -backed coalition have offered details on the attacking forces. Any of the attacking vehicles and personnel who turned around and headed back west were not targeted, the military official said.

The Euphrates, which flows through northeastern Syria, functions as a demarcation line separating the American-backed SDF and forces of the Bashar Assad regime backed by Russian Federation and Iran who are active around the city of Deir el-Zour.

The official said it appeared the pro-government forces were trying to reassert government control of areas that the SDF troops had seized from the Islamic State a year ago, and possibly to capture oilfields in the area. "Russian officials assured Coalition officials they would not engage Coalition forces in the vicinity".

This is not the first time the United States military has clashed with pro-regime forces in Syria.

The U.S. Navy also launched a volley of Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airfield in April after Assad's troops used chemical weapons against civilians.
