Zimbabwe's main opposition leader battles cancer

Without its founder at the helm, Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is likely to face immediate instability and could even split, handing a gift to new president Emmerson Mnangagwa in an election expected in the next six months. "VP Chamisa also continues in his assigned duties as the acting chairperson of the MDC Alliance".

In a statement Tsvangirai's Spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said: "President Morgan Tsvangirai has with effect from today, 7 February 2018, affirmed Vice President Hon".

The MDC-T leader has not been actively involved in politics ever since he was diagnosed with cancer and has been in and out of hospital since June previous year.

Under former president Robert Mugabe, he was regularly insulted, personally, and massively abused by the state-controlled media and mocked mercilessly by Zanu-PF leaders.

Dr Khupe hinted in the same post that Mr Tsvangirai's condition had become so dire that only divine intervention could save the opposition leader.

Biti and a handful allies broke away from MDC-T in 2014 citing Tsvangirai's reluctance to heed internal calls for leadership renewal.

"I was MDC-T A/president for months in 2008 on the basis of our constitution which has remained unchanged & clear on the roles of elected officers of congress".

Family sources told Zimbabwe's Bulawayo24 news website Mr Tsvangirai's health deteriorated rapidly on Monday.

Mr Chamisa, the youngest of Mr Tsvangirai's deputies, is set to take over from his ailing boss, unless something extra ordinary happens.

He and others in the MDC had said they were going into it to "save" the country because all hospitals, schools and supermarkets were either closed or empty as the Zanu-PF administration allowed hyper- inflation to wreck the economy.

This came amid reports that Khupe, Mudzuri and MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora had not been cleared by Tsvangirai to join some opposition parties, including Joice Mujuru's National People's Party and a Zanu PF breakaway faction's newly-formed New Patriotic Front, for a fresh round of coalition talks in Cape Town.
