Canada issues new travel warning for Playa del Carmen

In an emergency message posted to the embassy's website, the agency said it had received "information about a security threat in Playa del Carmen", and that it is barring government employees from traveling to the resort town.

The new alert follows another issued a week ago prohibiting US government personnel from using the ferry service between Playa del Carmen and the island of Cozumel.

Canada and the United States have issued a new travel advisory for Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico after two incidents of explosive devices being placed on tourist ferries.

The alert included an indefinite ban on travel to Playa del Carmen by US government employees. The move came after a US traveler died in a pool at a resort near Playa del Carmen after drinking. "We do not know why the USA government chose to emit this alert", the statement said.

"We take our obligation to provide information to USA citizens seriously as evidenced by the clear, timely and reliable safety and security information we release worldwide", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told ABC News when asked about the new alert in Playa del Carmen.

Still, Americans were not told to avoid travel to Playa del Carmen. More explosives, which didn't detonate, were found on another boat owned by the same ferry company last week.

The security alert coincides with the 2018 World Ocean Summit, which is taking place in Playa del Carmen from Wednesday through Friday, though it's unclear whether the two are linked.

While these groups don't usually target tourists, the advisory says "armed clashes" between criminals and security forces can occur without warning and Canadians could be "caught in the crossfire". The State Department also warned Americans to "exercise caution".

Just as thousands of Canadians prepare to head south for the march break, the Canadian government is issuing a travel alert for a popular tourist destination in Mexico.

Last week, four gunmen burst into a hospital in Cancun and killed a suspected drug gang member and his wife and, in 2017, four people were killed when a gunman attacked the state prosecutors' office in Cancun.
