Egypt: Alexandria's security chief survives auto bombing

A bomb placed under a parked vehicle exploded early Saturday in Alexandria, Egypt, killing two policeman and wounding five others in what is believed to be an assassination attempt on the city's senior security chief. The official survived, but one of his lead bodyguards died.

Four people were injured in the attack.

General Mostafa El-Nemr, Alexandria's security chief, was not among the casualties of the "terrorist bombing that targeted the convoy", his office said, quoted by state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram. It was reported that the public prosecutor has ordered an investigation.

The attack came just days before Egypt's presidential election, in which Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is virtually certain to be re-elected.

The evacuation deal was brokered by Russian Federation and worked out between Syrian rebels and the government. Air strikes killed 37 people in a Syrian town hours before a ceasefire began, rescuers have said.

Photographs posted online showed black smoke rising above the site of the attack near a police station on Al-Moaskar Al-Romani street.

The country has been under a state of emergency since April 2017, when suicide bombings struck two Coptic Christian churches in Alexandria and Tanta on Palm Sunday in an attack claimed later by ISIS.

Security authorities in Egypt are intensifying military operations against the group and are also tightening security across the nation in the lead-up to the presidential polls.

The president's ultimatum came after suspected IS gunmen massacred more than 300 worshippers in a Sinai mosque associated with Sufi Muslims, who are seen by IS as heretics.
