Ireland beat arch-enemy England to complete Grand Slam

Ireland beat arch-enemy England to complete Grand Slam

England's persistence paid off nine minutes before the break, the pacy Daly finishing after racing onto a clever kick from Owen Farrell, who was unable to add the extras as Watson was withdrawn because of a shoulder injury.

The home side then proceeded to hammer away at the Ireland line for 18 phases but the visitors' defence was resolute and England's attack was ended when Daly was pinged for a neck roll on Kearney.

England, unbeaten at home in the Six Nations since 2012, managed tries by Elliot Daly in each half and another in stoppage time by Jonny May but always looked second-best.

Joe Schmidt's men opened up a 21-5 lead despite having Peter O'Mahony in the sin bin.

Stockdale's try on the cusp of half-time was the definitive score, giving the hosts a lead that was just too big to chase down.

Sexton had left the field late in the first half only to return early in the second, but it was Murray who took Ireland's next shot at goal, with his penalty extending the lead.

England's home record under Jones is also gone, and a major negative for them was their discipline, continually allowing Ireland easy territory gains.

Ireland were a step ahead throughout.

Italy collected the wooden spoon, for finishing last, for the fourth time in five years after losing 29-27 to Scotland, extending its losing run in the Six Nations to 17 games. They have just beaten an English team that have gone on a long wonderful run.

The Twickenham crowd were even more livid just after when Aki smashed into Elliot Daly's head with what appeared a no-arms tackle, but referee Angus Gardner saw it differently and let Ireland off the hook. Sexton's conversion made it 21-5.

Ireland forced a penalty from the resultant scrum to relieve the pressure but a truck-and-trailer penalty spoiled the opportunity.

A tap tackle denied Daly on the left wing as England started the second half with positive intent but Ireland held out and in fact just shy of the hour mark came close to crossing for a fourth with the jinking feet of Jordan Larmour nearly taking him over the try line.

He nearly scored with his first touch but was hauled down just short by Daly, but more poor English discipline allowed Conor Murray extend Ireland's lead to 24-5 with a quarter of the game remaining as he took over the kicking duties from Sexton.

With 15 minutes left, England did get over for another score and once again it was Daly following a move off a lineout and outstanding Brown offload out of contact.

IRELAND -R Kearney; K Earls (K Marmion 74), G Ringrose, B Aki (J Larmour 56), J Stockdale; J Sexton (J Carbery 33-40, 67), C Murray; C Healy (J McGrath 51), R Best (capt) (S Cronin 65), T Furlong (A Porter 65); J Ryan (D Toner 67), I Henderson; P O'Mahony (J Murphy 74), D Leavy, CJ Stander.
