"My time today as mayor concludes". "I know that God will forgive me", she said then, "but that Nashville doesn't have to".

The news comes only hours after former Nashville Councilman Carter Todd called on Barry to resign in the wake of the scandal.

The council's speaker pro tempore, Councilwoman Sheri Weiner of Bellevue, will serve as vice mayor in Briley's absence. Those negotiations had apparently centered on whether Funk would agree not to prosecute the mayor in exchange for her resignation, the station reported.

At times during her tenure, she took on nearly celebrity status, rubbing shoulders with the city's musicians and athletes and appearing at concerts and Predators playoff games. "I would be remiss if I did not thank the thousands and thousands of people who have reached out to me", said Barry.

On her first day back to work after the death of her son, Barry took time to greet children commencing the school year, according to CNN affiliate WKRN.

One condition of Barry's plea agreement was to resign from the office of mayor.
