Rare Shelves Controversial Sea of Thieves "Death Tax"

Rare Shelves Controversial Sea of Thieves

Rare's awareness of issues surrounding the game suggests that living a vicarious pirate's life will only become more fun as Sea of Thieves evolves.

Neate admits that the developer "messed up with the messaging around this, and it's now gone".

Originally, there were plans for the Captain of the Ferry to deduct a small gold fee if the player died during quests.

Recently we heard about Rare implementing a "Death Cost" mechanic to their newly released game but after the highly controversial community feedback the idea has been deemed dead in the water. The rates were supposed to be dependent on the cause of the death, which apparently would have ruined the game for some players.

After a lot of negative feedback on the death tax Rare chose to not implement it after all, as announced in a post on their official site.

According to the release notes, this update drastically reduces the likelihood of tearing when players are inside taverns or when using the small ship, features sizeable framerate improvements when traversing large islands, and optimises Foliage for smoother experience in overgrown jungle areas. "Personally I have fun randomly blowing up my teammates with gunpowder barrels. Please don't do this".

"Normally I'm up for being careful and having a punishment for death, but I just don't think this is the game for it." another player explained.

The developer listened, and the death penalty will no longer be implemented.

As we noted in our initial impressions of Sea of Thieves last weekend, the game is probably going to need some serious changes to be a truly enduring multiplayer lark.
