Sarah Sanders: 'General McMaster Is Not Going Anywhere'

NBC reported Thursday that Ford Motor Company Vice President of International Affairs Stephen Biegun is one likely successor to McMaster.

The administration official and a source familiar with the matter say it is becoming more likely that McMaster will not return to the military and ultimately will retire as a three-star general.

McMaster is Trump's second national security advisor since he took office in January 2017.

The White House is preparing to replace National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster as early as next week, marking the latest in a series of Trump administration departures.

As for talk of a White House in upheaval, Sanders pointed out the tax cuts passed late past year: "If they want to call it chaos, fine, but we call it success and productivity and we're going to keep plugging along".

Speaking to reporters, Sanders said Trump thinks McMaster is doing a "great job" and that the security adviser "isn't going anywhere".

McMaster has clashed with President Donald Trump during his tenure, most recently when Trump rebuked him last month on Twitter for neglecting to defend his 2016 victory while discussing US claims that Russian Federation meddled in the election. Biegun previously served on the National Security Council under Rice in the administration of George W. Bush.

News of McMaster's potential replacement comes a day after White House communications director Hope Hicks abruptly resigned from her post.

He would be President Trump's third security adviser. Both the White House official and the former military official requested anonymity to discuss the matter. "There are no personnel announcements at this time", spokesman Raj Shah said.

Last month, Trump appeared to publicly scold McMaster after the adviser said that evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 election was "incontrovertible". Flynn has since pleaded guilty as part of a deal for leniency in exchange for cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.
