Trump fires Tillerson after visiting Nigeria

President Donald Trump says policy disagreements were behind his decision to fire Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Nearly from the get-go, Tillerson, the former CEO of Irving-based Exxon Mobil, seemed out of sorts and out of step with his mercurial boss. Tillerson also had policy differences with Trump, supporting both the Paris accord on climate change and the Iran nuclear deal.

Additional shots could be seen when Tillerson called diplomats "selfless leaders" who are needed when it comes to working with the United States' allies while stating "nothing is possible without allies and partners".

"He dived into policy matters in a way that unnerved many professionals at the agency", the official added, "and morale was taking a blow that was spreading from the analytical side, where some people feared he was tailoring some PDBs (President's Daily Briefs) to tell Trump what he wanted to hear rather than what the intelligence assessments were". The nomination was waiting for the confirmation of the Senate.

"I think it's bad, I guess he thinks it was OK", Trump said. "Really, it was a different mind-set, a different thinking".

"I feel empathy for Rex Tillerson", Countryman said. Pompeo was brought into the White House Friday after returning from an overseas trip and was offered the job formally by phone Saturday.

"It's a surprise, but Japan-U.S. ties won't be shaken". Tillerson's State Department, however, issued a statement asserting that the secretary "had every intention of remaining" in the role prior to being fired, had not spoken to the president about it, and was "unaware of the reason". Hours later, he was sacked, too.

United States jobs surge 313000 in February, unemployment steady
For now, though, the United States job market remains the biggest strength of the economy's recovery from the Great Recession. In a tweet Friday, the president praised the new figures which show more than 300,000 jobs were added in February.

Pompeo, for instance, has tended to play down the intelligence community's findings of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election and to stress Iran's missile development and role in Middle East conflicts instead of its adherence to the 2015 nuclear deal, some officials have said. The White House stated that Tillerson had been informed of the president's decision last Friday, but Goldstein's dispute of that claim and the close proximity to Tillerson's firing to his Russian Federation remarks fuel speculation that his comments on Monday contributed to his termination. Compare Tillerson's response to that of Pompeo.

Tillerson also likely took a jab at Trump by praising his State personnel for recently addressing "challenges of sexual harassment within the department".

From the start, the former Exxon chief had been an unlikely pick for top diplomat, with no formal experience but a lifetime's worth of personal relationships with heads of state and powerful global figures, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Critics said the move would sow more instability in the volatile Trump administration and marks the departure of another moderate who sought to emphasise the United States' strong ties to its allies amid Trump's criticism.

North Korean diplomacy was another wedge point; Trump's recent plan to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un came after Tillerson said the two countries were still far away from direct negotiations. Current and former White House officials said Pompeo has proven more adept at negotiating the shifting power structures inside the administration and in reading and responding to the wishes of the president.

But Pompeo has also gone against Trump on some issues.
