Walmart is bringing meal kits to thousands of stores

Now offered in 250-plus stores, the meals were developed and tested in the company's Culinary and Innovation Center, and are made and assembled fresh in-store daily. They'll be available in over 2,000 stores by the end of 2018, and you'll have the option of grabbing them through the company's Online Grocery Pickup service.

The pre-portioned kits include all necessary ingredients, already measured and pre-cut for meals such as basil garlic chicken and steak Dijon. The meals also will be available through Walmart's online grocery pickup.

Walmart is trying to tap into a business that has gained popularity in recent years as consumers look for convenient options to cook at home. Thai Curry Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice dishes are in the rotisserie chicken lineup. Meal kit options range in price from $8 to $15 and serve two people.

"More than 80 percent of Americans don't know what they will have for dinner tonight", said Tyler Lehr, a Walmart senior vice president. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up almost 17% for the past year.

Livingston doubts Walmart's meal-kit offerings will have a significant impact, questioning whether the retailer can "pull this off properly".
