Xi Jinping elected for second term after a unanimous vote

China's parliament unanimously handed President Xi Jinping a second term on Saturday (Mar 17).

Earlier this month, the National People's Congress, China's parliament, agreed to remove from the nation's Constitution the two-term limit for the president and vice president, effectively paving the way for Xi to remain in office indefinitely.

On March 11, over 2,900 deputies of the NPC have voted for the constitutional amendment for removing the two-term limit for President and Vice President proposed by the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).

He is in the frontline of Xi's anti-corruption campaign, which netted 1.5 million officials from lower-cadre to regional leaders and generals in the past five years.

Xi took office as president in 2013 and hasn't said how many additional five-year terms he intends to serve.

Known as "the firefighter" for his crucial role in tackling issues such as graft and domestic financial scandals, Wang looks certain to be handed the high-profile assignment of averting a trade war with the United States after President Donald Trump rolled out stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

"Look at how Trump is trying to approach [North Korean leader] Kim Jong Un, I think he has developed an approach toward authoritarian leaders, which is to give authoritarian leaders as much compliments as you can so they enjoy your compliments so much and will consider making concessions", Sun said. He was replaced in October as head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in line with the party's informal retirement age.

Among Mr. Wang's priorities will be helping Mr. Xi manage the critical but increasingly fraught relationship with the USA, people familiar with the matter have said. After winning all the 2,790 votes, Xi received a standing ovation after being appointed as the Chinese President for the second time.

"The overall leadership of the Party is the fundamental guarantee for deepening the reform", wrote Yang Xiaodu, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

Xi's new power might provide reassurance to investors who believe that bureaucratic resistance has slowed his reform agenda.

Wang's appointment has the potential to reshape what has traditionally been a ceremonial role. Post the voting, Xi was given a standing ovation by the legislatures while he shook hands with Wang.

Washington already has enacted a series of trade penalties targeting China and more are expected in the weeks ahead. In his new post, Wang is expected to play a key role in maintaining China's relations with the US.

In the government reshuffle, China's Foreign Minister might be promoted as State Councillor, country's top diplomat.
