In the record-making run, Semenya broke legendary athlete Zola Budd's 34-year-old South African record set in 1984 when black athletes were not allowed to compete with their white counterparts in the era of apartheid rule.

She started her surge with 250 meters to go and rounded the leaders with 200 remaining, extending her lead in the home stretch and then flexing her biceps in a bodybuilding pose after crossing the line.

Earlier on Wednesday, Cameroon's Chef de Mission, Victor Agbor Nso, said five boxers and three weightlifters vanished from their rooms "in three waves".
